"And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two."

Our text today is "an allusion, probably, to the practice of the Romans and some Eastern nations, who, when government dispatches had to be forwarded, obliged the people not only to furnish horses and carriages but to give personal attendance, often at great inconvenience, when required. But the thing here demanded is a readiness to submit to unreasonable demands of whatever kind, rather than raise quarrels, with all the evils resulting from them." Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Commentary

The instructions of Christ stand in stark contrast to our day's political and social dispositions. Even among those who profess to be Christians, the stream of rhetoric that is heard is so far removed from the spirit of Christ that it bears no resemblance to our humble and loving Savior. In practical application, our text directs us to comply with the demands of those in authority, not grudgingly, but with the spirit of Christ, going beyond what is asked or required, with no thoughts of retaliation.

"The way to improve the injustice of man to our own advantage, is to exercise under it meekness, gentleness, and long-suffering, without which disposition of mind, no man can either be happy here or hereafter; for he that avenges himself must lose the mind of Christ." Adam Clarke

Our victory is not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. Be assured, however, that we will always be victorious. "For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds" 2 Corinthians 10:4

We do not think nor reason as the world does, for "we have the mind of Christ." 1 Corinthians 2:16
